'Doctor Who': Watch the moment Jodie Whitaker regenerates into someone unexpected

Surprise!

Welp, that was unexpected.

On Sunday's episode of Doctor Who, Jodie Whittaker's five-year run as the Time Lord ended how we all knew it would — with her regenerating into a new iteration of the Doctor.

The twist? Rather than turning into Ncuti Gatwa, who was announced as the next Doctor earlier this year, Whittaker turned into...David Tennant.

The man who played the Tenth Doctor, it turns out, will be back for three special episodes next year as the Fourteenth Doctor, before Gatwa assumes his position in the TARDIS after that.

As you can probably imagine, fans were a little bit excited.

  1. She was good but all the PC story lines were annoying so I stopped watching it. But glad I watched it last night!

  7. Fkn awesome, he's the best, better than Tom Baker and the vet, now we just need Rose

  8. It is only a bait for the fans to return. Tennant will pave the way for Ncuti Gatwa, who will take over as the 15th Doctor and the show will go down the hill again.

  9. Hooray, has she gone? Awful.

  12. These Dr Whos are a bit like Tory PMs only they hang around longer. Same crap on the inside whatever the gender or colour though.

  13. Oh, surprise! It's the guy everyone liked before it was handed over to the woman for no particular reason!

  14. Most beautiful regeneration ever. Wishing for Tennant to stay tbh. The absolute best trio of Doctor Who will ALWAYS forever be Tennant, Tate and Russell T Davies.

  15. This regeneration scene is beautiful, one of the nicest and aesthetically pleasing ones to watch. Well done!

  16. The episode was actually alright overall, considering I wasn't the greatest fan of Jodie's era. Wish we had more time with Ace etc, but oh well. Look forward to next year!

  17. I still remember the time when he regenerated and I was bawling my eyes out. I can't believe he is back. WELCOME HOME KING!

  18. people need to notice that it looked more like a regression rather then a regeneration, right down to the clothes morphing back onto the body.

  19. I cried my eyes out for the last 10 minutes straight… I’m actually barely recovering ❤️‍🩹

  20. Been very critical of Whitakers run, but that was a great finale. Just shows what could have been with decent material, and that sunset regeneration....beautiful.

  21. David Tennant yes yes he's finally back

  22. I just love his utter confusion, reacting the same way we would have if it wasn't leaked and spoiled 100 times over

  23. Absolute legend giving 3 what’s like when the titanic crashed into the tardis the man’s a legend

  24. For the first time in a long time, I haven't smiled this much...thank you Doctors of all generations ❤♥💙

I'm actually gonna watch this entirely now. Mind you I haven't watched the doctor since 2012..

  25. the Doctor finally having a peaceful regeneration full of hope :')

not a fan of some parts of 13's run but her regeneration is definitely among my favourites

  26. Honestly one of my favourite regenerations! So beautifully done! In love with this scene! 😍😍🥰🥰

  27. I just finished watching this episode and I've never had been so happy for the Doctor to regenerate so badly, I usually cry but not today! I love how she was written off like a big slap to the face, it was just instantly better, finally a cliffhanger I'm looking forward to. It was something Jodie could not pull off if she had came back.. anyways I'm also not looking forward for the 15th regeneration. Yeah... I can already see it going down hill.

  28. I hope Donna is giving the chance to recover all what she grew as a person with The Doctor and was taken away from her.

  29. Having been born just before the first episode I've been watching Dr Who all my life and I felt this was one of the best episodes Jodie Doctor was given. Admittedly it was bit of a mash of up of scenes that made it feel like it was three episodes of fan service crammed into 90 frenetic minutes. As I watched fan-pleasing scene after another I found myself wondering if the script was something of an apology from Chinny and the story room to the fans because over Jodie's era the stories she was given to work with were down there with John Nathan-Turner's era without the excuse of having a tiny budget. This had been something of a pity because Jodie's as The Doctor makes my top six, pity we did not get a John Pertwee (my Doctor), "'Hai" from her but you can't have everything.

  30. I hope the soundtrack to this episode gets released, that final music was amazing

  31. Thank you Jodie definitely has become one of my favourite doctors after been sceptical about her at first I'm so happy she made me a fan gonna miss her

  32. I like really how quiet and introspective it was up until this moment. I haven’t been too gone on how bombastic and over the top the regenerations were from David onward. Speaking of which…

    ReplyDelete
  33. Brilliant episode Brilliant cliffhanger only thing I hate is waiting till next year

    ReplyDelete
  34. My niece just burst my ear drum screeching down the phone about this. She’s a massive 10th doctor fan 😅

    ReplyDelete
  35. This is how you get people to care about Doctor Who again, bring back one of the best Doctors

    ReplyDelete
  36. He didn't sound to thrilled considering when he died the first time it was heart wrenching and he said he didn't want to go! I cry every time I watch that scene. I'm confused by the clothes though. The doctor always kept the old clothes when regeneration happened then he changed into something to suit his personality

    ReplyDelete
  37. I can't be the only thinking that the music for this regeneration is just epic?! The music, the effects... considering this is a 'temporary' regeneration so DT can come back for a bit, they did a hell of a job with this scene!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. The fact that her clothes regenerated too makes me laugh. DT didn’t even want to be caught dead in that crappy outfit even if it was for only a few minutes. 😅😅😅

    ReplyDelete
  39. At least Chibnall had the decency to give her a beautiful exit. Wish the rest of her run could've been like that.

I've never been more excited to hear the word 'what" three times in a row in a shocked face manner. Really looking forward to this grand return.

  40. The most beautiful regeneration ever.

  41. She wanted to be the Tenth Doctor so bad that she literally became him. 🤣
