Netflix password sharing crackdown: How to get around it | Mashable.

Netflix is cracking down on password sharing, but you can get around it

Netflix's password sharing era is over. But that doesn't mean you can't get around the new rules.

The popular streamer announced earlier this month that a crackdown on account sharing would come to the U.S. sooner rather than later. Netflix added the ability to pay for extra account users in places like Canada, and while one can assume that will come to the states eventually, the situation is a little more murky right now.

But, as things stand, there appears to be an easy way around the new rules. Here's how it works.

How to circumvent Netflix's account sharing restrictions

Netflix's new official policy(opens in a new tab) is as vague as they come: "A Netflix account is meant to be shared in one household (people who live in the same location with the account owner). People who are not in your household will need to sign up for their own account to watch Netflix."

How that works in a practical sense is that Netflix uses things like your home internet's IP address to determine if you're really at home, or if the account is being used elsewhere. While Netflix may introduce more stringent measures down the line, Lifehacker(opens in a new tab) has identified one easy way around these new rules.

When you attempt to use Netflix in the U.S. outside of your home base, you'll be prompted to enter a verification code that will be sent to the account's primary owner. If you are that person and you're simply trying to watch Netflix in a hotel room or something, you should have no problem complying. However, if you're not the account holder, you may need to get a little creative.

I'll just say it's very easy to send strings of numbers to your friends using a smartphone.

You may have to do this repeatedly, which can get annoying, but it should enable your Netflix sharing habits to continue for the time being. If that changes, we'll let you know.

  1. Seriously? Your goal is to ripoff Netflix and the creative people who work on the shows, many of whom don’t work that often? Look at the WGA negotiations going on now for more money, because the writers got a raw deal. Many are unemployed for long periods of time. Just pay for the subscription if you are not family. FFS.

    5. no. I'll cancel my whole subscription. So they get 0 dollars instead of the price they are getting now. Tell me genius. How are those artists gonna get payed then lol.

  2. Lot of people with Netflix but they all pay different amts. so does this mean you are already being charged for sharing per person.

  3. I don't have it anymore but I do sometimes stay at my parents house so I would be in a different location but still me using it.. Seems silly really.

  5. Sign of the times. People can’t just follow rules, they are always looking for a way around them.

  6. I live in Canada and last month, I travelled to the USA for a week. I was able to use Netflix without issues, most likely because I logged in on certain devices before leaving the house. They never asked me for a code or anything (Canada started enforcing password sharing earlier than others).

  7. What about if I own 2 homes in different cities? This can get annoying.

    1. it’s already here in Canada. It’s no big deal. You get an alert with a code to enter if it sees you in a different location. Enter the code and that’s it.

Maybe it’s better to make great content with all that money spent on tracking „different-city-living-mom-password-sharers”?

I’m just thinking, not suggesting anything.

I’m actually thinking if I should buy fav movies on physical media so it will be „mine” and they should be conerned this movement across the industry instead.

    3. so did Blockbuster. None of the best content is on Netflix. Prime, Apple, and Hulu make way better content. I am just saying for all these people complaining there are way better options. Netflix is going the way of Facebook…old dying technology.

    12. Netflix is the only streaming service that lets me actually watch television. Go ahead and type in "Best shows on Hulu" on Google search and you'll see after an hour of typing in the various top ten lists titles found one letter at a time on your smart TV remote that the results aren't actually on Hulu, they require the paid Starz upgrade or something extra and you just go down the lists on the top tens and not a one is available on basic ad free Hulu and it's not just Hulu that's like that. It's the majority of them. What's so great about Netflix is that while it might not have the new movie that everyone is gossiping about at school on there, what it does have is good quality recommendations that you can click on and actually enjoy instantly and I've never been the teacher's pet type towards the popular kids anyways. It's just not that big of a loss for me to never see the new Batman movie that was so funny and everyone is quoting and reenacting scenes in class but I could rent those ones separately if I wanted to.

    14. I get Hulu as part of my Disney+ bundle and it has all the 80s action movies I love and some of the best bingable series out there. I used to love Netflix when their Netflix content was good. But now I think Amazon and Apple are making better movies and series. Of course, that is just my opinion and I am no expert. I just don't see how they can demand more money from people with less quality. And then on top of that demanding everyone pay for their own account now versus having family sharing. I get what your saying about others having the add on stuff...that is annoying,.

You decided to make it political. You "SAW" these billboards, really? With your own eyes? I don't think so. It was a digital spoof circulated on social media such as TikTok. Maybe save your breath and comment time to fact check and educate yourself, before you continue to prove to everyone reading your responses that you are nothing but a sheep.

  20. We have a 4 month free trial but first impressions are that the search function isn't very good, especially if you want to browse because you don't know what's available. It also has an annoying preview/ trailer running when you do browse. We may not want to use it often enough to start paying.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I wouldn’t have a problem with that if they didn’t Jack the prices up $10 a month more! Seriously? Put the prices up… don’t improve the selection .. and then tell people who can use the account they pay for. 🖕
