Former Neuralink employee alleges Musk wasn't telling the truth about test monkey deaths | Mashable.

Musk lied about monkey deaths, report says

A new report details what Neuralink's test monkey's went through just as Musk says the device is ready for human trials.

On the same day Elon Musk announced that his brain implant device company Neuralink is preparing for its first human trials, a damning new report featuring insight from a former Neuralink employee shed new light on the brutal conditions that Neuralink's test monkey's underwent before being euthanized.

Inquiries and investigations have previously been launched regarding potential animal welfare violations at the company. However, the issue was once again thrust into the spotlight last week after Musk claimed that no monkeys had died as a result of the Neuralink implant.

"No monkey has died as a result of a Neuralink implant," Musk said in a post on X. Regarding early implants, Musk made the claim that, "to minimize risk to healthy monkeys, we chose terminal [monkeys] (close to death already)."

Ten days later, Musk would share a Neuralink post about how the company would soon roll-out human trials.

"We’re excited to announce that recruitment is open for our first-in-human clinical trial!" posted the official Neuralink account on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, earlier this week.

Musk added his own comment as well.

"The first human patient will soon receive a Neuralink device," Musk followed up in an X post on Wednesday, explaining the potential benefits the company is hoping to provide with the device for those with quadriplegia or ALS.

"Imagine if Stephen Hawking had had this," Musk continued.

Hours later, Wired would publish a new report detailing the torturous conditions the test monkeys underwent before their eventual deaths, directly disputing Musk's recent claims about the animals and their suffering.

According to Wired, records show that one monkey was euthanized in March 2019 after her health declined in the months following the Neuralink implant. A report found that the monkey's brain was bleeding and the implant left "parts of her cerebral cortex focally tattered." According to the report, the issues began in the days following the implant as the monkey started to push her head against the floor, signaling she was in pain. The monkey would pick at the implant, another sign of the animal's discomfort. Eventually the monkey lost coordination and would "shake uncontrollably" around Neuralink workers.

A monkey who received the Neuralink implant in December 2019 was euthanized after part of the device "broke off" during the surgery. The company attempted another surgery to fix the issue but found fungal and bacterial infections which they could not clear because the implant was blocking the infected area. Another monkey was euthanized just months later after "his cranial implant became loose."

In addition, the report shared comments from a former Neuralink employee as well as a researcher with knowledge of the tests, both of whom refuted Musk's claims about the monkeys being terminally ill before the Neuralink implants. The former employee called Musk's claim "ridiculous" and shared that the monkeys had to undergo a year of behavioral training before the implants.

  1. Elon pushes how great the things Neuralink is doing.
Wired published a new report "detailing the torturous conditions the test monkeys underwent before their eventual deaths."

Before someone says well, monkeys dying could help, maybe millions of people ask themselves, can the same thing be said about death in self-driving cars today vs. where the self-driving tech could do in the future?

Are the folks using Elon's self-driving cars just like those monkeys?
How can anyone buy a car from that man?

    1. Except for the fact that the Tesla self driving system is much safer than a human driver… and the Tesla’s are the safest cars in the world, have the highest safety rating of any car.
A Tesla driven by FSD or autopilot has only about 10% of the risk of ending up in an accident as a human driver using the same car.

    7. First I’ll say I fully love the idea of Tesla cars. Mostly everything about them reminds me of the future that I’d like to be a part of. But they’re not anywhere near perfect…yet. So I get how someone could make the argument that if you buy one now and fully trust their autonomous features, there’s a good chance of death or injury. I won’t buy one yet. But I do hope they’re farther along from a dependency standpoint in about 5 years.

    8. Tesla FSD is not available here in Norway yet, but Autopilot works very well. I have followed the developments of FSD since the beginning, and it has improved massively just in the last year, version 11.4.7 is almost flawless. Version 12 will be the first version out of beta, at which point I expect a human driver will become unnecessary(at least where the laws are ready for fully self driving vehicles).
My statement earlier regarding the Teslas Autopilot and FSD being safer than a human driver, was not based on my personal experience, but on earlier statistics released by Tesla... newer statistics based on number from both Tesla and the NHSTA, are a bit less impressive, but still the autopilot is almost 9 times safer than a regular car with a human driver, while the FSD is about 5 times safer. So still much safer than human drivers.

Auto Accidents Per Million Miles in 2022:
      * Tesla vehicles with Autopilot (mostly highway): 0.18
      * Tesla vehicles with FSD (mostly non-highway): 0.31
      * U.S. average vehicle: 1.53

So in pigs brain, I believe the gold and platinum version produced a formation of scar tissue that was deliterious to the vitality of the organism and device over time, and was also less capable, storage of differing bandwidths and stimulus was also greater for the more brain vitality friendly Iridium version. I think reading between the lines they were on track to being able to generate visual data that was experienced by the consciousness during dreamstate, an ability which would have potentially very good or very bad consequences or more likely an admixture of both......I mean I just thought of Necrobot Fentanyl Spider drug delivery device LLC, the dystopian mascot for the cthonic city of Dark Web. 1. yes, in medicine. That’s the other issue, this is not “medicine”. This is literally scientific experimentation of hardware to “wetware” interface. While it could in the future be used to address issues and seen as a form of medicine, right now this is not even remotely close to that.

This is closer to “we tortured a bunch of sick primates so we can have a whole new tier of product to sell people”
