Twitter was never a non-profit company. Neither are Tesla or SpaceX. But OpenAI was supposed to be a non-profit company. Elon Musk contributed a lot to OpenAI, he involved some of their best scientists, helped get it funding. And all of that was on the basis of OpenAI being an OPEN SOURCE, NON-PROFIT company, that was working for the benefit of humanity.

He certainly was one of the founders of Tesla, it was in fact settled in court, that he was one of the five founders of Tesla. While it's true that two of his early partners there, Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, initially came up with the name Tesla Motors, before Elon Musk officially had joined them, they did not own the rights to the name. It had been trademarked by a guy called Brad Siewart, who had nothing to do with the company. Elon Musk joined Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning only a few months after they initially named the company, and the first thing Elon Musk did was to buy the rights to the name from Brad Siewart... that's really when Tesla Motors officially was formed. And actually, they had all known each other well before this, as they all had been interested and mildly involved(test driving prototypes and similar) in another electric car project called T-Zero, well before Tesla Motors was formed. And here is the thing, when Elon Musk joined Eberhard and Tarpenning, they had not made any prototype, there was no design, there was nothing ready. Elon Musk was involved from the start in the design and engineering of the first Tesla car, the 2008 Tesla Roadster. And in fact the release of the car was delayed due to design changes that Elon Musk insisted on. Both Eberhard and Tarpenning HAD LEFT THE COMPANY *before* the 2008 Roadster had been released. And the Roadster, while being important in getting the company attention, was NOT a commercial success. It was Elon Musk, NOT Eberhard and Tarpenning who both had left the company, that led the company to its success with their Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y.
Grok is just the first little fun test project of his xAI company. He has also been deeply involved in AI at Tesla for a long time. He contributed a lot to OpenAI on the basis that it should be Open Source and non-profit, others as well have put huge money into OpenAI on that premise.

ReplyDeleteMoney (revenue, profit) *usually* comes from providing a useful service or product.
And so it helps focus work on what is most useful.
Which isn't super helpful if you have along R&D path, but they have already passed that.
