The 2024 Olympics began with a star-studded, impressive opening ceremony in Paris.

The event featured a totally new look, opting to feature the Seine River and stunning background of the city itself instead of the typical garish display inside a stadium.

Being in Paris, we expected big-time artists and celebrities and it certainly delivered.

Zinedine Zidane

French soccer legend Zinedine Zidane got thing underway by carrying the Olympic torch in a pre-filmed sketch that got the Olympics underway.

Lady Gaga

As lots of folks expected Lady Gaga appeared at the opening ceremony. She performed a song in French, complete with dancers, choreography, and an orchestra, as the athletes made their way down the Seine.

Marie Antoinette

OK, not really. But someone dressed as Marie Antoinette held her own disembodied head. Really.

Aya Nakamura

The uber-popular French pop star performed, dressed in all gold with dancers following along as she walked and danced through beautiful Parisian backgrounds.

Steph Curry and A'ja Wilson

The NBA and WNBA stars, respectively, were interviewed during the NBC broadcast about their goals and experiences with the Olympics.

Michael Phelps

The Olympics G.O.A.T, swimmer Michael Phelps, appeared in the procession, though, obviously, he is no longer competing.

The Minions

Yes, for some reason, we got what amounted to a Minion advertisement in the middle of the ceremony. Apparently they were created by a French artist.

Gojira

The French metal band played a very metal performance after a section honoring Les Mis.

Noah Lyles

The world's current fastest man was another featured interview on the NBC broadcast. Lyles promised a win in not only the 100-meter, but also the 200-meter.

Rim'K

French rapper Rim'K performed on a barge on the river.

Snoop Dogg

Grammy-nominated rapper Snoop Dog was seen carrying the Olympic torch through the streets of Saint-Denis on Friday. But he also gave us a little jig after Algerian-French rapper Rim’K performed.

LeBron James and Coco Gauff

Team USA flag-bearers Coco Gauff and LeBron James were featured in interviews during the NBC croadcast. The tennis star and NBA icon did a joint interview about how thrilled they were to represent the U.S. in Paris.

Joel Embiid

Former NBA MVP Joel Embiid was featured in an interview on the NBC broadcast, describing how he chose to play with the U.S. and not France or Cameroon, where he was born.

Juliette Armanet

The French singer did a lovely rendition of "Imagine" on a floating barge, accompanied by a piano that was on fire. Kind of cool.

Rafael Nadal, Carl Lewis, Serena Williams

Spanish tennis superstar Rafael Nadal took over the torch from Zidane toward the end of the ceremony. Alongside Nadal on a boat in the Seine was Serena Williams and former track star Carl Lewis.

Tony Parker

The French retired NBA star helped carry the torch.

Celine Dion

After a long ceremony, and lots of waiting for Dion, she finally, as rumored, performed. And she did so in grand fashion atop the Eiffel Tower.

  3. Hey Machouillable, you forgot our blue papa Smurf, Philippe Katherine with the "tout nu" (all naked) song (because when you are naked you can't hide a gun, lyrics that resonate with many french people who feared for a terrorist attack during the ceremony). Bisous. (Oh and respect for Marc Cerrone, french electro disco pioneer who graced us with his Supernature hit during the light show on the Eiffel Tower) ♥️

  4. What a joke, way to long, plus waiting to see your team on a boat then sub par performances. I guess this is the Olympic opening show on a budget.

  5. Definitely not “every performer”.

  9. I've just been through it once - why would you think I'd want to relive any of that?

  10. OMG that was mostly boring and horribly produced!

  17. Why would I want to watch drag queens and the bashing of Christians ?

    1. I’m sure the athletes who train their entire lives for this, do not miss your viewing them achieve their life long dreams and definitely do not need your judgments. 💯🇺🇸

    2. as a woman on your fb page that stands for Christ, I’m curious how you stomached the blaspheming of Christ?

      Delete
    3. I have followed Christ since 1972…work daily on being a better me. God gives us discernment. Atheist and Satanist mock Christ, nothing new and does not affect my beliefs.

Expecting everyone to believe as I do, live like I do and not support the athletes because I disagree with the opening ceremony is exactly what the 👿 wants.

There are many things in life I disagree with but does that mean I should not enjoy the things I do agree with? 🤔

      Delete
    4. so partake in blaspheming Christ? Fair enough. Why do you think cancel culture exists? The Bible says our fight is not against flesh but powers and principalities. We are called to fight the good fight and pray for our enemies. Not partake in the sin.

      Delete
    5. “partake”? Interesting word. Did I “partake” in the sacrilege because I watched it or did I observe a sacrilegious event and not allow it to affect my beliefs? 💯

      Delete
    6. They wanted our judgement or else they wouldn't put it on the world stage.

      Delete
    7. That is your choice, and I made mine. I have already contacted one of the sponsors of the Olympics that I do business with, they need to let me know where they stand also.

      Delete
    8. your faith is evidently weak

      Delete
    9. as believers we are told not to judge…lest you be judged, even in public or on a world stage. Not our place no matter how you word it or where it happens. 💯

      Delete
    10. So you don't think it's our job to protect the innocent against evil ?

      Delete
    11. It's easy to give in to sin, it's a strong person to turn away from it and to let others know.

      Delete
    12. your use of words are very intriguing. “Protect” the children, of course but how does that relate to the opening ceremony?

And, Lana with so many children being SA’d by men of faith…not sure trying to clean up the Olympics is where we should be focusing on protecting children. 💯

    13. But don't worry sweetie, I am sure that your husband doesn't mind you being a bigot and that you will eventually come out of the closet and give him that big wet sloppy kiss that he so richly deserves for putting up with such a horrific mouth of yours, when you get up off of your knees though.

    3. agree that Celene Dion's perfomance was amazing. the rest was totally embarrassing imho. Peyton Manning and Kelly Clarkson made us look like southern yud yud's. can't tell you how proud i am a useless weed smoking rapper was there to represent America. thanks Snoop Dog and NBC. that was mostly awful and weird.

  27. The parade on the Seine was a good idea. It brings the ceremony of the games to the people, not just ticket holders to the stadium.

I cringed to think upon the opportunities for terrorists to exploit it, but so far everything is going smoothly.

The light rain makes it all more beautiful in a French impressionist art way. The raindrops on the grand piano gently floating down the river and the opera singer delivering from the roof top are my favorites.

  28. Must there always be some reference and portion of the ceremony dedicated to the rainbow people? I'm all up for inclusion, but no need to turn an Olympics ceremony show into a bit where two guys are about to make out with each other, or possibly get into a menage-a-trois with a female. What does this have to do with sports? Let's leave politics and rights movement outside the ring.

  32. All the hype about the uniforms and the American uniforms look like school uniforms and the men wearing them at least in the picture above could not even wear them appropriately. No class or respect and not even paying attention. They have to live with their phones in their hands and faces. Pretty sad world we live in today.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Some parts were good and others were strange for sure. The light show on the tower and Celine were the highlights. Much too long. Also, I felt for those athletes in the rain on the choppy river.

    ReplyDelete
  34. It was definitely unlike any other opening ceremony I've ever seen. It showcased the city well, even with the rain.
