The water pistol emoji is now a gun emoji on Elon Musk's X

While X makes the change, most platforms still depict the emoji as a color toy water gun.

Elon Musk has brought about a lot of change to the platform formerly known as Twitter. Most notably, he dropped the Twitter name for "X." He completely stripped verification of all of its meaning. And Musk's new content policies at X basically mean nearly anything goes on the platform.

Just this past week, there was another change made to X that seemingly went by under the radar.

X has dropped the "water pistol" emoji, which was depicted as a colorful and harmless looking child's toy — and replaced it with an emoji depicting an actual gun.

Trading in the water pistol emoji for a gun emoji on X

The announcement was originally made on X by @yacineMTB, an employee of the company,

"update announcement on x dot com (the website), the gun emoji was returned back into its rightful form: an m1911," reads the X employees post alongside a "Pepe the frog" meme and a side-by-side comparison of the water pistol emoji and the gun emoji.

The Verge noticed the change on Tuesday and pointed out how then-Twitter first introduced the water pistol emoji in 2018. The gun image was the original depiction for the emoji as decided by the Unicode Consortium, the group that basically controls the introduction of new emojis.

In 2016, Apple decided to swap the gun emoji for the friendlier imagery of the water pistol emoji. Companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Twitter followed soon after. So many tech companies made the change to a water pistol that the Unicode Consortium ended up officially updating the gun emoji as the water pistol emoji.

On July 18, X employee @yacineMTB announced that they had made the change back to the gun emoji on the X website.

"Fixed on web, soon to be fixed in rendering on mobile!" Elon Musk said in a reply to the emoji announcement.

It appears that X is the only platform making this change for now. Other popular online platforms continue to show the toy water gun emoji.

    6. that's some backwards logic if I've ever heard it, why would I have a problem with a picture of a water gun as long as it's not replacing another options? What's abnormal is a grown person demanding a glorified sticker shouldn't be available to other adults because it upsets them, it's toddler behavior.

    5. is right the second Amendment hasn't been updated since muskets. That's gunpowder. Australia has guns band and so do a lot of other countries and the places that have guns band have way less mass shootings let alone killings with guns. Remember guns are designed to kill they are not designed to wound. Please pick up a book.

      Delete
    7. yes with AR-15 since the 1950s. Before that we had huns and after that. Again, I will be alright with my weapons like everyone else. Guns are inanimate objects. Maybe it would be better to focus on mental health since guns don't shoot themselves at people. 🤷🏾‍♀️

      Delete
    8. AR-15 was designed in the 50’s by Armalite, hence the AR. The gun was designed to kill varmints and small animals. Armalit sold the patten to Colt and their revised gun was sold to the military. There was a ban on the gun for public use from 1994-2004.
I haven’t yet research the stats on gun violence during that time to know how good that was for our nation.
During that ban the patent expired and other companies started making their own guns. They made changes. By 2004 the market for this gun exploded. So we really haven’t been living with the same high powered AR-15 that was designed in the fifties. It wasn’t readily available to the general public and it wasn’t the same gun. Just as with the young man who shot at donald, used his Dad’s gun. Purchased legally. Mental health is absolutely an issue. Do you really want to go there?

Why did I waste my energy on this? You’re a Russian bot.

    8. For news, for the latest info and discussions, X is a platform where many top politicians, business/tech leaders, celebrities, news personalities, etc are active. Facebook is more to keep in contact with grandma and occasional debates with delusional Elon Musk haters… 😄

      Delete
    9. what makes them delusional? You do know his bias is fully towards authoritarianism, right? How else do you explain Don Lemon, or him flipping the bird to his sponsors?

      Delete
    10. Don Lemon made a colossal fool of himself, sabotaged his opportunity, by behaving like a petulant child in that interview with Elon Musk, insisting on radical left lies and constantly talking over Musk and repeating his silly gotcha questions when he didn’t like the answers he was getting. Don Lemon had an enormous opportunity and he ruined it by not being able to reinvent himself, but continuing to do the CNN leftist thing.
But note that Don Lemon was not censored, was not banned or kicked off the platform, his show was and is still available on X, but after this messed up interview, very few people have bothered to watch his show.
Elon Musk did not “flip the bird” to “sponsors”… he told the people who were trying to force him to re-introduce censorship on the platform, trying to force him to leave the principle of freedom of speech behind, he told them to go f themselves.
I think that was worthy of respect, he showed that his principles are not for sale… including the implementation of free speech on X.
X is today the only large social media platform that respects the freedom of speech of it’s users.

      Delete
    14. I am not saying that Elon Musk is “politically neutral”, I am saying his platform X is. Elon Musk is politically a moderate centrist.
He is partly right and partly wrong in what he is saying about his child Xavier/Vivian. I have great sympathy for transgender people, I can imagine being born like you feel you are in the wrong gender body, has to make life a lot more difficult.
But the idea that you can medically transition to the other gender is unfortunately just a mirage, a false idea.
A man can never become a woman nor vice versa. Trying to medically transition is bound to fail, because it’s not possible. There is nothing natural about the medical treatments that they have cooked up for trans people. And they don’t work.
Democrats like to act as if a person is transgender that then medically transitioning with hormones and surgery is the only choice, the right thing to do… that’s absolutely absurd… and is unlikely to make their lives any better as it will in most cases take away from them the ability to have children and to have sexual enjoyment.
Like Elon Musk says, they are sterilized and mutilated, under the guise of “gender affirmation”, a completely made up thing, which simply doesn’t work.
That said, he is absolutely wrong to talk about his son being “dead”. She is still his child and he should be more careful with his words, that is a very hurtful thing to say.
But again, he is partly right, in that his child would probably have had a better life just living as a transgender/gay person in the body she was born with. Identify in whatever way she wants but learning to accept her body.
And yes, it’s not surprising that his child was brainwashed by marxist teachers to “hate the rich”, that seems very common among young and naive kids these days. And him being the richest person in the world makes him a target for her hate.
I hope he apologizes for saying that his “son is dead”. I understand what he was attempting to say, but it is still a wrong and very hurtful thing to say about your own child, so he should apologize. And I hope Xavier/Vivian will eventually grow out of the Marxist delusions she was taught in school about rich people, billionaires like her father are contributing enormously to society, and especially her father has done more than anyone else to help the progress of humanity, both in terms of technological progress and in terms of fighting climate change.
