Tesla tells workers on Cybertruck line no 'need to report to work' for the next 3 days

Elon Musk's controversial electric truck may have dug its own box-shaped grave.

Elon Musk is having a terrible, no good, very bad week.

First a judge struck down a stock grant that Musk persuaded Tesla shareholders to give him, in part by threatening to leave the company. That grant, originally worth around $50 billion, would now be $100 billion, thanks to a post-election rally for the company whose owner went all-in for the next president.

$100 billion: even for the world's richest man, currently worth $333 billion, that's real money. The grant would have doubled Musk's lead over the world's second-richest man, Jeff Bezos, in the all-important billionaires list.

But news that is subtly worse for Musk's long-term prospects just leaked out of Tesla's Austin factory: Cybertruck production appears to be ramping down. Workers on the vehicle's assembly line have been told that there's no need to report to work for 3 days.

According to Business Insider, which has four sources on the factory floor, this comes on the heels of several similar slowdowns in October. Not to mention an increase in cleaning and training duties to fill their hours, and a sharp decrease in overtime offers.

Tesla hasn't yet commented on the reason for the slowdown, but this is not what you would expect to see from a carmaker with a hit on its hands. Automotive companies usually see most of their sales in the spring, when potential customers get tax refunds and driving conditions improve. So if Tesla execs were anticipating banner sales in a few months, the Cybertruck factory should be cranking right this minute.

You wanna buy a Cybertruck?

Instead, Cybertruck inventory seems to be backed up — never a good sign when your job as a business is to shift it. Especially not good if you had two million pre-orders, because it suggests nearly all of those pre-orders, bar 50,000 or so, weren't serious. (Which, given that potential customers only had to put down a $100 deposit, seems a likely outcome.)

Normally, you shift inventory by lowering price. Tesla has instead raised the average price of the Cybertruck (the cheapest trim vanished from its website in August), even as its 350-mile range turns out to be lower than Musk promised.

This isn't just a detail for car nerds to care about. Because if there's any non-Trump-related fundamental driving Tesla stock growth at the moment, it's the uptick in Cybertruck sales (while other Tesla models have seen flat or diminishing market share). Some 28,000 of the oddly angular vehicles were sold in the first 3 quarters of 2024, according to estimates by Cox Automotive (Tesla doesn't break out its sales figures).

Analysts, in the aggregate, expected 48,500 Cybertrucks sold this year, so that's not a bad showing — certainly better than rival electric trucks from Rivian and Ford.

But here's the $100 billion question: Will Tesla get anywhere close to selling 250,000 Cybertrucks a year? That's the production capacity Musk has insisted on, and effectively bet the future of Tesla on. Given that the Cybertruck isn't for sale outside North America — and given its trouble with regulators in Europe and China, it isn't likely to happen any time soon — Musk's bet is almost entirely focused on the U.S. truck market.

Two million pickups are sold every year, so it seems reasonable to assume Tesla can grab an eighth of that total. But can it? Or is reality about to overwhelm Musk's "if you build it they will come" approach?

The Cybertruck has seen six recalls in 2024, a massive number in the car business. The most recent was just this month — thanks to a faulty part that may cause, wait for it, a loss of power to the wheels.

SEE ALSO:The Cybertruck's failure is now complete

You have to squint really hard to see the Cybertruck as anything other than the butt of recall-related jokes. Every week seems to bring with it a new report of Cybertruck owner woes on social media, from an expensive case of leaking oil to a massive systems failure during an outing for a protein shake. This winter may bring worse news for Musk, judging by the Canadian Cybertruck owner whose vehicle died after two hours of use, while he was trying to defrost it.

At least there is one silver lining for Musk. If Cybertruck sales are falling off a cliff, and if they start to take Tesla shares down with them, at least the stock grant Musk missed out on will be worth less than $100 billion. The question is, will he?

  1. It is a $100k vehicle. There is no way that every year, more than 250,000 people buy a car that expensive. And it is way too divisive and controversial for a car to sell that many, especially seeing how the overwhelming majority of people seems to hate it.

  2. Tesla nis toast. Musk did what every shouldn't do....become a political product. You alienate half of Americans and reduce your market potential by even more considering Republicans don't like EVs. 100k for broken truck? Only fanboys pay that. I predict Tesla will move overseas because green car buyers are mostly Democrat and musk hates them and is very vocal about it. He lost so many potential customers. Hopefully his fans will buys multiple trucks to save this horrendous looking hunk of junk. He will leave Tesla very soon I predict.

I hardly see anything wrong with what was said so feel free to actually explain, other than Elon 'leaving' because he'd technically be kicked out (from what I can tell, he only owns around 20%) by people that like their company to make money. The only thing Elon's still got is his uncanny ability to feed people lies to raise stock prices and even that's dissipating fast.

  3. Hold on - saying that the 2 million reservation holders weren't serious is disingenuous. The vehicle didn't come close to meeting expectations.

I reserved a vehicle in the first few days for $69,900 that fell short on all of its promises and would have cost me well over 130k delivered. I wanted the CT to succeed, but it became an ego stroke.

Truck requirements aren't difficult to understand, Musk and his team chose to ignore them and built what they wanted a truck to be. Clearly they've failed.

Sure, it's wicked fast, but a truck with no range and no towing capacity is a toy.

There's virtually no infrastructure in the US to recharge. They're no good in bitter cold weather (nor are hybrids). The US doesn't have the energy infrastructure to support a nature of EV's. Add to that the needs for AI (in the future) and the US would have to triple its power grid manufacturing. Hopefully small nuclear power plants can be built quickly and efficiently for our 1st grid upgrade in decades. We need it for any number of reasons.

Cybertruck?

I already suspected that the market for the Cybertruck was more limited than the deposits indicated, but this is looking quite dire for the future of the vehicle. It wouldn’t surprise me to see it discontinued within the next 1-2 years, even with a price decrease.

    1. Pretty obvious that $100 reservation price created a false demand image, especially when the initial offering ended up being a $100,000 - $120,000 vehicle that fell short on promised specs. That 2 million reservation list has resulted in almost 28,000 deliveries and that reservation list is exhausted. Still very much a niche offering. I don't think the shutdown is so much demand oriented as it is for some line changes attributed to building the cheaper single motor model.

    2. Some here still think that Tesla selling 28k trucks over the last year means that they are on-track to sell 30-50-100k in the next year. They are not. Tesla is demand-limited and not production-limited. And that 28k was high demand phase - when there were still reservation holders interested in getting a car, people who specifically waited for it for years. Now that reservations are done, the demand can only go down and Tesla will be lucky to deliver 25k Cybertrucks over the next year.

This has been true for all Tesla cars. There is the initial growth in sales as reservation holders get their cars. Demand is guaranteed by the reservation list, so sales grow in line with manufacturing scaling up. Then at some point (1-2 years later) the reservations run out and sales (in the same geographic area!) go down and reach an equilibrium of sales per year. Tesla in the past then used the spare manufacturing capacity to start exporting the cars and sell it in more and more markets. This is not going to work for the Cybertruck - its basically a USA-only thing. And when Tesla runs out of new countries to expand to, the sales start to slip. Look at the curves for Model S, Model X and Model 3. They all have been in steady decline over the years.

    3. This ignores that pricing will likely fall precipitously. The cyber truck was clearly designed to be a cheaper vehicle. The long range spec is going to be <$60k. The model S Plaid is a much nicer vehicle and <$80k.

    4. They WANTED the CT to be a low-priced vehicle, however considering the tech inside it and the way it is constructed I expect it to be anything but cheap. The rigid body panels it uses have low manufacturing yield, due to being difficult to manufacture within desireable parameters of flatness and surface finish.

48V low-voltage system, steer by wire, rear axle steering and so on don't come cheap either.

    5. It's not going to be that cheap until the dry cathode manufacturing actually starts delivering lower battery costs. And until it is actually manufactured at large scale. So far there is no indications that it has the mass appeal to get sufficient sales even at 60k.

    6. They could stick a regular-looking body on the chassis (since there's in reality no exoskeleton on that damn thing); the underpinnings aren't terrible. It just looks awful (and has some truly epic awful aspects to it like the huge blind spots created by those enormous A-pillars, that dumb windshield wiper etc), that's all.

    7. Not a bad idea, they could bolt on a regular painted sheet metal body and save weight, reduce ugliness, and likely improve functionality.

    8. Make that in a Ford factory, put a Ford badge on it and make the bed compatible with all the F150 accessories on the third party market and you are likely to have quite a lot of sales there.

    9. Elon could buy Ford also while he's at it then. :)

  84. One of the greatest own goals in corporate history was caused when a British CEO called Gerald Ratner insulted his products and customers at an after dinner speech. His "comedy" was recorded and he was gone within days. The company barely survived. If a collapse in Tesla orders becomes directly traceable to Musk's insane behaviour recently then he too must go.

Already we see that lease buy-backs have changed, seemingly because the oldest Teslas may not be able to run a full version of FSD as Elon promised. If that breach of promise is ever the cause of a class action or fitting H4 to millions of cars, he should be fired for that too. Insulting the progressives who made him the richest man on earth is the behaviour of a mad man. One drug test would probably be the end of him. Good.

    1. you're right! instead of worrying about his stock options he should worry about not letting the TSLA sink otherwise his options will be worthless... too sure of himself, that's usually when the most catastrophic mistakes are made

    2. Maybe check TSLA stock price?

    3. TSLA is a meme stock right now, just like DJT. TSLA at least makes money, but the crazy 95 P/E is outrageous. YoY car sales numbers are down. FSD and Robotaxi will never work, and Optimus? Seriously? It should be a 10 P/E ratio at best.

    4. Since when has the stock price of anything been linked to reality? If the board fired him and the stock price immediately went stratospheric, maybe you would understand cause and effect are sometimes extremely complex. Basic morality however is easy in comparison.

    1. As an owner, I have to say the textured body is much harder to keep clean than a smooth one. I will get a wrap. A smooth/polished stainless surface would be easier to keep clean as well.
