End of an era: Tesla to wind down Model S and Model X next quarter
If you planned on buying a Tesla Model S or a Model X, better hurry: These two models will be discontinued soon.
The plan was mentioned by company CEO Elon Musk during Tesla's earnings call on Wednesday. It was later confirmed in a tweet from Tesla's official account.
"As we shift to an autonomous future, Model S & X production will wind down next quarter," the tweet said. "If you’d like to own one of them, now’s a good time to place your order."
The move doesn't come as complete surprise. Tesla kept its two premium models alive with small updates over the years, but never really gave either model the complete overhaul it deserved (this especially goes for the Model X, which still looks almost the same now as it did when it first launched in 2015).
Instead, the company focused on its best-selling SUV and sedan, the Model Y, and Model 3, while sales of the Model S and X dwindled. When reporting sales, Tesla lumps all of its premium models together in the "other models" category, and in the last quarter of 2025, it sold only 11,642 of these, a 51 percent year-over-year decrease.
Still, the discontinuation of Model S and X is a huge deal for the company and will likely cause a lot of grumpiness among fans. The Tesla Model S was the company's first family sedan, and the first car it sold at any sort of meaningful volume (the Tesla Roadster was the original Tesla car, but it was more of a showcase of what electric cars can do).
Perhaps most importantly, unless it comes up with something new, Tesla will now have a pretty big gap in its lineup. The Model 3 and Y are a compact sedan and SUV, respectively. The Model S is a large family sedan, and the fastest Tesla car you can get; The Model X is the company's most luxurious vehicle and the only truly large family SUV it had in its lineup.
Now, if you want something a bit more posh or spacious from Tesla, you'll have to go for the divisive Cybertruck, which is selling abysmally. That "other models" category we mentioned above? It also includes the Cybertruck and Tesla Semi.
Tesla's next car should be the self-driving Cybercab/Robotaxi, which isn't something regular people will want to own. The much-delayed new Tesla Roadster should arrive in 2027, but that's a pretty extreme sports car that even Elon Musk admits not everyone should own.

Instead, Tesla is increasingly focusing on its humanoid robot, Optimus. In fact, the company's production line in Fremont, California, where it used to manufacture the Model S and X, will now be replaced by a production line for Optimus.
What about the cars, though? Per Elon Musk: "The only vehicles that we'll make will be autonomous vehicles, with the exception of the next generation Roadster."

ReplyDeleteIt was an absolutely life changing experience that put Tesla (as the Model S and later the Model X were slightly more affordable than the original Roadster) and EVs on the map and led to Tesla releasing the Model 3 and Model Y.
Tesla proved that EVs can be fun and affordable, and led to other manufacturers to produce their own EVs.

ReplyDeleteEven though the S and X only made up about 2% of total Tesla vehicle sales (roughly 30,000 units in 2025) it’s still shocking to me that Elon decided to discontinue them. My 2022 Model S Plaid is by far the most amazing car I’ve ever had.

ReplyDelete I have the model Y performance and wish I bought the model X performance because my son and I love gaming and I didn’t know that model had an actual gaming set up inside of it lol hindsight is always 20/20. I guess it’s probably a good thing. I didn’t get it because with them phasing it out parts and repairs will only become more costly for owners of this discontinued model

Deletesorry bro, yea that car was one of the only 4 door cars I really liked and been thinking of getting one used myself. I currently have a 2024 Model 3 LR. It just doesn’t give me that walk away and keep turning to look at my car feel like a S plaid would. I can’t lie this is pretty depressing.

how long you think I’m gonna keep the vehicle? Lol. 7 years is my max, and you can still get parts and service on a 12 tesla model s. (14 years old) I see no reason why you couldn’t get service on a 26 in 33/34. These are quality cars and a good company. Another thing to consider is there is a massive market building for aftermarket replacement parts, yes including batteries, from non Tesla. So there are and will be plenty of options

ReplyDeleteEnd of an era. Kinda sad to hear that Tesla is officially sunsetting the Model S and X. My Plaid is easily the best daily driver I’ve ever owned. It’s a shame to see the flagships go, and honestly, this will likely be the last Tesla for me. End of the road for the OG's. Maybe the roadster will come to fruition someday.

"If you’d like to own one of them, now’s a good time to place your order."
Of course, logically, you might be thinking, "Well, of course they said if you want to secure one now, it's a good time, because there won't be any left." BUT it could be a Tesla strategy to get mass purchases. Some might be thinking, "If I buy, there will be fewer and fewer units, and it might appreciate in value, and later I can sell, like the stock market." Everyone is thinking differently. In my head, the math doesn't add up.
It's sad to see the S and X go, they were flagship cars. The S is Tesla's fastest model (in the Plaid variant), and the X is unique among cars, and very practical. I can understand why they have been discontinued, because sales of the 3 and Y are enormously higher.
ReplyDeleteThe writing was on the wall when Tesla ceased production of the S and X in left-hand-traffic (LHT) markets. Maybe it was always the plan to replace the S/X platform with the more economic 3/Y platform? I guess economics win, but I feel it is a shame to discontinue the two luxury Tesla models. I really hope that Tesla continue to have parts and support for the S and X into the future (including LHT markets).

DeleteIt's not a decision Elon took lightly. These vehicles spurred Tesla into the chapter it's in now and the chapter it will soon turn into (if not already), fully focused on autonomy and robotics and offboarding the traditional "automaker" model.

I believe things may be automated in the home, but it’s not going to be some robot doing all chores in a home….it’ll be a washing machine that does laundry stuff.
