'Downton Abbey: A New Era' teaser trailer has Maggie Smith spilling secrets about her 'mysterious past'

"And with that I will say goodnight and leave you to discuss."

A new era beckons for the Crawley family. And big changes are in store!

The teaser trailer for Downton Abbey: A New Era hints that life has moved on at Downton since the series and the first movie — for the better!

Love is in the air for Tom Branson (Allen Leech) who appears to be getting hitched in the trailer. As for the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith), she's "come into the possession of a villa in the south of France" as the result of a connection with a man she met before the Earl of Grantham was born. Um, what happened there then?

Also, has anyone seen Henry Talbot (Matthew Goode) — AKA Lady Mary's husband? His name is conspicuous by its absence from the cast list.

All shall be revealed when Downton Abbey: A New Era opens in cinemas on March 18, 2022.

    Mary: “What?”

“I have come to be in possession of a villa, in the south of France.”

    Mary: “What?”

Matthew is still alive living as an amnesiac in France

    4. I find “what?” Very rude, and one would think rich people would say “pardon”, but I learnt from “the crown” that saying that makes it seem as if u are begging for something.

It looks like Sybbie, Marigold, and Caroline (Mary’s daughter, whom she’s holding) were flower girls/bridesmaids.

  16. We need to have a "mid-quel series" that takes us back to the days of Sybil and Matthew, when they were alive.

There were lots of years when both were alive, which were only lightly covered.

A Downton Abbey: Matthew and Sybil series would be extremely popular.

It could alternate between stories involving the two individually. And sometimes stories that involved both together in some fashion.

And weave alternate camera takes from the original series into the footage, to nail the new stories into the fringes of the original stories. Like was done with the Karate Kid movie and Cobra Kai.

Matthew and Sybil were the two most popular characters in the original series. And their untimely and ill-considered deaths ripped a hole in the hearts of many fans.

  21. It feels like the movie will start with Lady Violet announcing her inheritance. Tom then gets married. Lady Violet is too ill to travel to the South so other members of the family would go there, partly to celebrate Tom's new marriage and in the villa they would uncover some artefacts about Lady Violet's pre-marriage life.
