Apple will let you unsend and edit messages in iMessage, chaos to ensue: Apple WWDC 2022

What could go wrong?

At WWDC 2022, Apple has announced a feature we have all been both waiting for and dreading: unsending text messages in iMessage.

According to the announcement, you'll also be able to mark messages as unread and edit texts in iMessage, bringing the maximum level of chaos to your group chats. Simply long-press a message to reply, undo send, edit, and copy a message.

This new feature for iMessage will roll out with iOS 16, which is slated to be released in Fall 2022.

Twitter users are already imagining the ways these features will be used.

  1. Telegram has this feature for ages. You can edit the last message or remove any message from the conversation. You can even clear the entire chat history on both ends instantly.
Also in Telegram I set up different visual themes for people from different groups like office/family/friends/etc = easy to distinguish between chats. Super option - news Channels and there is no limit on number of people in your groups or amount of files you send. I really don't understand why people use Apple Messenger, it's so limited and outdated.

  2. I'd be willing to bet there's some sort of hidden way the original can be obtained when speaking of crimes. The whole feature though seems pointless, people have phone addiction, so most people are likely to see the original.

    1. I'm not sure because I remember a few years ago where a crime took place and apple would' let the government access the phone so the government had to figure out there own way of unlocking the phone. It was a big deal surrounding privacy in all scenarios.

  4. Any of the current messaging services with the same feature show a notification to everyone that a message was deleted. And after a certain amount of time you can only delete the message for yourself, like an hour or two. It’s not the big deal everyone is making it out to be. Just be careful sending photos because the recipient could be auto saving all photos to the camera roll of the phone. Honestly, who hasn’t sent a text to the wrong person and wanted to delete it?

  5. You know that message delete & edit usually only works up to the moment a message was read? So I don’t know if this is the case here but before talking about desasters why not first look into the details of a feature?

As they write: developing … but great to talk about a possible mess before others. Great journalism by Mashable … NOT!

  6. Everything. These two features alone will be the reason so many abusers will be freed from any conviction they may see themselves in, that’s just one example.

These edits could also be used to hide the original message, even if it’s highly inappropriate or uncomfortable to the victim or receiver. These features just spell out social disaster.

    2. And what about when they claim the screenshots are photoshopped, etc? Without being able to see the original message it could be misconstrued as fake screenshots.

    3. photoshopping can be detected with existing tech.

  7. Not physical domestic abuse.
