American Airlines briefly halts U.S. flights after IT issue

American Airlines flights were briefly grounded on Thursday, with a nationwide ground stop preventing them from taking off. The company has now issued a statement attributing the disruption to an IT issue.
The ground stop was issued at approximately 6:30 p.m. ET / 3:30 p.m. PT, and appears to have impacted all American Airlines flights within the U.S. at the time. The company has over 1000 planes in its fleet, and is the biggest airline in the U.S. by capacity.
Fortunately, the issue was quickly resolved, with American Airlines stating that flights had resumed less than an hour after the ground stop began. According to the airline, an IT issue was to blame.
"A technology issue briefly impacted connectivity for some of our systems on Tuesday evening," the official American Airlines X account posted at 7:21 p.m. ET / 4:21 p.m. PT on Tuesday evening. "Systems are coming back online now and flights are departing again. We put a temporary ground stop in place while our teams worked to resolve the issue. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience."
Exactly what said technology issue was has not been disclosed, however it does not appear to have posed a danger to ongoing flights. A ground stop is a standard measure used to manage aircraft traffic, and can be issued for incidents such as severe weather, significant equipment outages, or to prevent gridlock at an airport. As of writing, there are multiple ground stops at airports across the U.S. due to thunderstorms.
Even so, a nationwide ground stop is less common. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) states that ground stops are one of the most restrictive traffic management methods, and that alternatives must first be considered before one is issued.
Did they switch it off and back on again? 😄 or maybe blocked all the AI?

ReplyDeleteAircraft mechanic here, people need to stop this train of “We deserve an explanation or we deserve this and that” Aviation is a big delicate industry, meaning you’re literally trusting your LIFE to this airlines, our job consists of SAFETY first and let me tell you something, life is not perfect and there’s things we cannot control, weather, IT problems (since reliability is completely on computer and technology now, this are regular machines that won’t work perfectly all year long) and sometimes personnel shortages (meaning you decide deliberately call out sick today)

In aviation WE work a lot, we give our personal lives, relationships, weekends, early mornings and late nights, just to get this unconscious comments from people who wouldn’t last a day doing all we do.
But more sad is to see how our society encourages this behavior, not only in aviation, entertainment, service industry and hospitality, people demand so much, not understanding that everything that you get there’s people behind working really hard and are not trying to sabotage your trip or life.

ReplyDeleteI was on a plane in Phoenix that night when the pilot announced that due to the IT problem our departure would be delayed to allow passengers from connecting flights to make it onto our flight. Even so we arrived in San Jose close to the scheduled time.

Interesting….since a church group traveling home from Africa traveling for over 30 hours was told they were stuck at the O’Hare airport for weather related issues then refused to give them any sort of vouchers, forcing them to rent a large van to drive six hours home, past home technically to pick up their luggage at the airport in Minneapolis….not ok…

ReplyDeleteAA hired Ganesh Jayaram as their Chief Digital and Information Officer a few years ago. Before this job, he trashed John Deere. Around 2024, he outsourced all AA IT to India (where he is originally from). He started his reign of terror at Boston Consulting Group. Wonder what the cost of a systemwide ground stop is? Will it come out of his bonus?
ReplyDeleteThis has become SO COMMON, because I am convinced our airports are hard targets for constant cyber attacks that disrupt their critical systems.

Many of their baggage handlers seem to enjoy smashing them, even while the instruments are in a heavy duty travel case which makes it appear to be deliberate. These cases are made to withstand the rigors of travel yet many times show up completely smashed.
