Toyota gives first glimpse of its upcoming electric pickup

Rivian is getting a competitor.

On Tuesday, at an event in Japan, Toyota once again spoke about its grand plans for battery-powered vehicles. Akio Toyoda, global president of Toyota Motor Corporation, said that the company plans to offer 30 BEV models in all segments, across the Toyota and Lexus brands by 2030, with more on the way.

By that time, Toyota plans to sell 3.5 million electric cars per year; to achieve this goal, the company will invest roughly $70 billion globally in electrified vehicles.

Toyota supported these plans with a room full of electric and hybrid concept vehicles. The one that's probably the most interesting, spotted by Electrek, is an electric pickup truck, unceremoniously tucked into a corner. Toyota didn't reveal any details about this particular car, but it looks like a direct competitor to Rivian's R1T and Ford's upcoming F150 Lightning, and with Toyota's expertise in making great pickups, it could be a very interesting car.

As for when we can expect this car to hit the market, it probably won't happen very soon. Despite its early dominance in hybrid vehicles, Toyota currently only has one electric vehicle available for pre-order, a futuristic SUV called the Toyota bZ4X, coming next year. A recent report also said the company plans to launch an affordable electric car in China in late 2022.

Other interesting concepts Toyota has brought to the event include a cute compact cruiser (above) and a massive bZ SUV (below).

  1. So they closed the grill on a Tacoma and now it’s an EV? Fine work there Toyota. Take the rest of 2022 off.

  2. That’s actually cool looking

  3. This all seems pretty half baked and rushed, as if they needed to show something, but they don't have much in the works. 3D renders just don't excite much anymore.

  4. The creativity here is astounding. /s

  5. Not to worry, they wont need remote start, so instead they will bill you for remote door unlock with this one.

  6. Cool. Make a smaller one too. The Maverick is right sized in my mind.

  7. EV's are all fine and dandy, but where are the charging stations, and the infrastructure to support them?

    1. Same thing said about gasoline powered vehicles a century ago, back when you had to go to the hardware store, usually, and dip gasoline out of a hogshead with a ladle to gas up your car. True story.

    2. For one, there were a hell of lot less gasoline powered cars back then.
Society, as a whole, was still running on the old horse and carriage, as well as trains.

  8. I love the fact it looks relatively normal-looking, even if it also does look like they repurposed some existing parts from the Tundra/Tacoma lines; which makes sense given their penchant for trying to have as much part commonality as possible (and why generational body changes take forever). It probably will also be a great EV lead-in for their existing Tundra/Tacoma/Hilux base, given the extreme similarity.

Here's to hoping they do similar with their eventual 4Runner EV, Sequoia EV, and Land Cruiser EV variants. I kind of like the viper fang look of the current "Sport" model 4Runners, so just "EV-fying" the grille to look a little more like a snake snout would work in my book. A Sequoia-like EV would probably build off this design, assuming this design is also used for a Tundra-like EV equivalent, just larger.

    1. Looks like it was designed by Legos.

  9. When are EV designers going to do something unique with vehicles that no longer need a traditional hood/Grill? I'm not buying a EV that looks like a ICE shell converted over to EV its just stupid!

    1. We had horseless carriages for a decade or two also

  10. As much as it adds to the cost, I would actually love to see a 4-motor option for this, which could give some amazing on and off road performance benefits that nobody else provides with either ICE or EV trucks. Imagine if you could utilize torque vectoring on a truck...

  11. More important will be the interior. Give us electric vehicles that we can operate with gloves on i.e., BUTTONS for important functions, not screens. I'd love to see a someone from the Toyota design studio climb into the truck covered in mud and try to navigate through 4 menus before you can lock the damn differential.

  13. "Its styling comes in halfway between the outgoing Tacoma and the new 2022 Toyota Tundra"

That seems accurate. At first glance, I liked that it looked a lot like the Tacoma—which I think is a good-looking truck, despite being long in the tooth. Then I started noticing some styling details that were borrowed from the new Tundra and I was like, "Ehhhhh… I can live with it."

It looks better than the Tundra, not as good as the Tacoma. Right in between. Regardless, I'd love to see a quality mid-sized EV truck from Toyota. I dislike them as a company, but if they can do a good enough job they won't have many competitors in that space for a while, and the other mid-sized offerings (aside from the upcoming Frontier) are imo stupid-looking and malproportioned.

  14. This looks great. Don't let the RAV4 or the bZ4X designers near this.

  15. That is a killer looking Taco and a worthy replacement for my 2017. Just give me a long bed, which I would certainly guess that there will be.

The slightly rounded hood line will be welcome change.

  16. Thats bad ass that we are FINALLY seeing manufacturers ease into EV design. The F150 Lightning looks very similar to the ICE but slightly different. Now we get this from Toyota. Excellent. Looks like an updated Taco with Tundra design language....not some futuristic statement piece. Love it. And so will the buying public.

    1. Someone will hopefully come up with fill plates so that it is not crying. Easy mod there. Haha!

    2. Rigid will surely come up with a way to fit some sort of LEDs in those fake vents. But now that you say its crying, I cant un-see it! DANG YOU!!

    3. Sorry!

I could see LED kits for there coming from every vendor.

mesocutoms.com did a great job on color matched fill plates for the current Taco, but I don't mind the stock setup there.

    4. That's war paint not tears.

    5. That would be even more reason for me to fill them. Just not into the overly aggressive designs. Jellybeans of the 90s with minimal grilles were my thing.

I can't believe that Lexus stuck with the Predator look this long.
