Argentina beat Croatia in World Cup semifinal and the internet reacted appropriately | Mashable.

'GOAT status is now undebatable': The internet goes wild for Messi's World Cup semifinal triumph

An assist, a goal, a win, and jokes.

Argentina, led by the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) Lionel Messi, shellacked Croatia 3-0 on Tuesday (Dec. 13) to advance to the 2022 World Cup final. It was a signature perfect performance from the Argentinian star, and the internet freaking loved it.

Messi scored the first goal of the match on a penalty that he slammed home in the upper right corner. But his most brilliant moment came in the 69th minute on an assist. He streaked down the right flank, spun around Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol, before placing a perfect pass to put Argentina up 3-0. It effectively ended the match. My descriptions simply do not do the plays justice. Watch for yourself.

Pretty much any sports conversation these days revolves around the GOAT debate. Messi, Ronaldo, (other) Ronaldo, Pelé, Maradona, Zidane — they're all viable options in soccer. The only potential missing feather in Messi's cap was a World Cup win, and he's pretty dang close now. On Twitter, folks posted about Messi already being the sport's undisputed GOAT. I can't really disagree.

Others simply marveled at the skill on display and the now decades of brilliance we've seen from the star. Messi is 35 years old and still producing magical plays on the largest stage.

France and Morocco play on Wednesday to determine who will face Argentina in the final match. That team will be the last thing standing between Messi and the one thing he has yet to accomplish on the field.

  2. Hahaha... GOAT if you are a 13 year old american, maybe. He is not even the greatest Argentinian of all time!

  3. Hmmm nope. He will rank among the greatest. Plus the final is not over yet. And even if he won the WC (and I hope he does coz he fully deserves it), he still needs 2 more WC to get closer to the GOAT Pele.

    1. sorry but Pele hardly even played the big football, his career was all about winning mediocre teams in his club career, and the only good thing about his career are 20 games he had on the pitch with Brazil which was playing on the World Cup. 20 games alone can’t make a player great

      Delete
    2. Good point. But, the big football? Well, everyone defines that differently. You think today is the big football, well, to Pele and all footballers back then, that was big football. This is all relative and subjective. But winning 3 WCs back then is not mediocre. It is to you today, coz you only know today's football. You think Messi will be GOAT 50 years from now? Well think again my friend. 50 years from now Croatia, Real Madrid, Barca, will all be mediocre teams. Hell, we might have robotic teams by then and robotic referees!! ... Technology ruined the beautiful game. To me, Pele will always be The Jewel of Football.

    3. we, humans, never determine greatness in relative terms, rather we focus on objective evolutionary comparisons. You don’t compare Einstein’s inventions with those of the cavemen, do you? Pele was the best in his times, yes, Pele’s name will remain in history forever, again yes, but was his career as glorified as Messi’s? By all metrics, I must say it wasn’t.

    4. I think we agree on one thing "in his time" and for many more years ahead. Back then you had Pele-Maradona rivalry, just like you have Messi-Ronaldo. Though to me Messi is on a whole new higher level than CR7. Speaking of the cavemen and ancient civilisations, to me they were just as innovative as Einstein or Edison or Bell. Again "in their time". Think of what they invented in their time, e.g. communication. Today's technology would not have been possible had they not invented smoke signals and hieroglyphics. Perhaps.

    5. yes, this definitely makes sense. Just like the cavemen have invented the biggest things in the world, Pele and Maradona can also be attributed to the heroic pages of the history of football. But as time progresses, the humanity creates new challengers as many as possible to prevent new Peles from ever emerging, and any men who can nevertheless survive and make it through become the new standards for next-generation textbooks. In that sense, Messi is better than anyone else in history. And he will remain one until somebody who is a genius on another level will stand the tests of even tougher times. Thank you for reading btw, appreciate it a lot!

  4. I don’t understand why everyone talks about Messi as GOD. Younger with Barcelona he was better. He’s 35 and is still very good. Career wise one of the greatest. But yesterday he was not Argentina’s best player.

    2. That referee is as corrupt as FIFA, Messi also in on it, he's sleeping with the Saudis. The NYTimes ran a story on it a few weeks ago.

  7. Still needs to lift the world cup and even then he'll be behind Pele as a GOAT.

    3. and? Pele played different era. No one agrees with you.

    4. you must be joking hahaha pele played in a time they smoked cigarettes at halftime, never played outside of Brasil besides USA. Cmon he was good even great but he is not even top 5 of the greatest ever

      Delete
    5. well, 2 questions. NEYMAR has equalled Peles Record yes? And is a goal awAy from being Brazil's all time goal scorer correct? Maybe that's the comparison you should be making.
Messi won Balon'dors as young as 20. Only player to do that. Then only player to assist and score in 3 different games in a single world cup since 1966. There is also the little fact that he is European Golden boot king with more of them than anyone. He is the assist king of football has more assists than anyone who has ever played. Has more completed dribbles in Football than anyone. So what exactly is Pele better at? Winning a world cup is not dependent on just one player. So that talk is silly a cup is won by every player in a squad including someone who played 2 mins. Think those things through we love to have something to say but logically compare and then argue with your very logic. One love.

    6. you have no clue making a statement like that lol. Ask experienced professional footballers themselves and they'd laugh at you.

    1. his goat status really comes down to W/L of one game? What if he has a hat trick and they lose? What if he has a mediocre game and they win? It's so silly. Your greatness is determined by the totality of your career.

      Delete
    2. I agree but you can say the same about Maradona who managed to win a WC for his country so its not “undebatable” yet

    3. I think it'll always be debatable regardless of what happens in the final.

    1. playing for Barcelona under Rijkaard & Guardiola along with wizards like Iniesta & Xavi helped. Maradona raised the levels of reasonable Argentinian & Napoli teams to new heights. Messi is one of the greatest for sure, but no way THE greatest.

  22. Boring match. Easy game for Argentina. Nothing outstanding. No one was stretched and challenged. Nervous Croatia gave up fighting in the first half after improper penalty and the frequent bad ball clearance by Sosa that gave the net to Brazil and to Argentina easily. Waiting for France hybrid game play to KO the Argentines soon.
