Apple's AirPods will have cameras in the future, report says | Mashable.

Apple's upcoming AirPods might have built-in cameras

No, not that kind of camera.

Apple's AirPods will one day come with built-in cameras.

While that may sound preposterous for a gadget whose primary purpose is to deliver sound into your ears, there is a good reason for it: spatial experiences.

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is planning to mass produce AirPods with infrared (IR) camera modules by 2026. These cameras would be similar to the Face ID received on the iPhone, and would like be produced by major Apple supplier Foxconn.

These cameras, which could detect environmental image changes, would enable new spatial audio experiences, Kuo claims. In an example provided by Kuo, a user could watch a video with Vision Pro and AirPods on, and when they turn their head towards a specific direction, the sound source coming from that direction could be emphasized to enhance the experience.

Apple puts a big emphasis on spatial audio in most of its audio-related products, and it's a big selling point of Apple's audio streaming service, Apple Music. With the addition of infrared cameras to AirPods, Apple could probably get a lot more precise head movement tracking, allowing for richer experiences. It's unclear whether the new features would be exclusive to using AirPods together with Vision Pro, or if they would extend to pure audio listening as well.

Even without the IR cameras, Apple plans to enable some new features to AirPods with iOS 18, including new head gestures, such as nodding or shaking your head to answer or decline a call. Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking will also become available for gaming for users using the newest AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max. These features will become widely available this fall, when iOS 18 comes out of beta.

  10. Novel idea but if we can’t even get VR and AR to catch on, this has no chance; this would be a cherry on top of those technologies. They need more time in the oven…

  39. I think there's a reason for a air pod to have a camera. As air pods gain computing capability, and air pod with a camera could help blind people navigate by giving audible warnings or information gained from the camera which may be able to see more than the user. I'm hoping in not too many years, an air pod in transparency mode might be able to do language translation for me (like a Babblefish from Hitchhiker's guide).

    1. Came to say this. Could be many uses for blind or disabled users or for medical assistance. Imagine having limited sight but AI Siri narrating the world around you and telling you to watch for things like a seeing eye dog.

    2. Right. I'm sure some implementations could be overwhelming audio overload but if done right could be great. A lot of people don't realize that many blind folks aren't 100% pitch black vision. Many have partial vision or it's just really blurry.

If these understand pointing gestures, the user can have more control over what audio descriptions they get.

      Delete
    3. That would be cool if they can help the blind.

  40. This makes absolutely 0 sense to have anything to do with directly integrating with Apple Vision Pro. AVP has so many sensors already that this would be totally redundant.

But extending the "spatial computing ecosystem" makes sense. AI headphones that are aware of roughly what user is looking at for personal assistance or enabling hand gestures like the AVP volume adjust pinch and drag.

    1. Apple may see Air Pods with spatial gesture controls as a gateway to people then actually wanting to buy / use a Vision Pro.

      Delete
    2. eh, Hahah AVP is such a hard sell to normal consumers I don't even know about that.

I think any technology Apple has developed for AVP that they can trickle down into more appealing devices people are already interested in buying is good. Good for Apple for making use of those R&D funds and good for consumers getting helpful features in what they are using.

  42. i’m sorry, earbuds with cameras? Who thought of this? I am genuinely concerned

    1. Why would this be any more shocking than eye glasses with cameras like Raybans?

I guess IR wouldn't be usable social media fodder but it's not really shocking with an increase focus on AI and computer vision that our devices will start adding more cameras and sensors to be aware of the world.

      Delete
    2. There is a difference. Cameras mounted on eyeglasses can see straight ahead. Cameras hanging from your ears can only see to the sides and partly ahead—and that only for those who don't have long hair.

Here is my take. Apple has money to burn, so burning it this way will serve as well as any. Research is a legitimate business expense.

Recall the Apple Car, which people were imagining in weird ways, including one that had a ground clearance of about an inch and no visible doors. The driver must slide in from the back and drive looking between his toes.

  43. Still does not fix the fundamental problem. Air Pods and ear buds like them fall out of my ears all the time. I’d much just prefer headphones that are secure.
