Serena Williams doesn’t just hit her target on the tennis courts — she hits them on stage, too.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner let her distaste for Harrison Butker, an NFL kicker from the Kansas City Chiefs, be known and took a few other shots at controversial men in sports while hosting this year’s ESPYs.

While presenting alongside her sister and fellow athlete Venus Williams, and producer and actress Quinta Brunson during a segment dedicated to applauding the rise of women’s sports and encouraging viewers to tune in, Venus said “Go ahead and enjoy women's sports like you would any other sports, because they are sports."

Serena chimed in with her eyes locked to the camera: “Except you, Harrison Butker, we don’t need you.”

“At all. Like, ever," Brunson said in agreement.

Why was Butker in Williams' crosshairs?

Butker continues to face backlash for the controversial comments he made in May at the Benedictine College commencement address that went viral. As a part of his speech, he commented on women’s lifestyle preferences, the LGBT community and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

“It is you, the women who have had the most diabolical lies told,” Butker said after congratulating the women of the graduating class on their “amazing accomplishment.” He then went on to suggest that women, including those in the graduating class, would find more fulfillment as wives and mothers than by building careers.

Throughout his speech, Butker also referred to Pride month as a “deadly sin” and described diversity, equity and inclusion efforts as tyrannical.

Following his comments, the NFL released a statement that emphasized the Butker’s comments reflected his own views and not the view of the organization.

Other members of the sports world that made it into punch lines for the trio include ESPN’s Pat McAfee, who apologized for calling Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever a “b*tch” from Indiana.

    5. It is a complete lie to say going to work is more rewarding than motherhood , or fatherhood. I know your small brain can’t understand this. The world is full of old miserable man hating women that are just mad they either waited too long or never had kids because they were brainwashed from birth that they don’t need men. It’s why govt created welfare the biggest lie/scam in American history. And men need women. Goes both ways.Nothing on the planet more amazing and important than being a parent. But you fall for the media trap like always and not pick one sentence or two taken completely out of context.

      Delete
    6. but it’s not. he specifically mentions women.

    7. Dude. I didn’t pick one sentence. I watched and listened to his whole awful speech. That wasn’t even the worst part of it.

why can’t a man be a homemaker? why was he singling out the women? why can’t women have careers and men take care of kids at home? sure, being a parent is awesome. as a parent, i can tell you that. but i’m not going to ever say it’s more rewarding than a childless person’s life.

      it was straight up misogyny.

    Replies
    1. I tend to agree with you on this. While I don’t think Butker should have said what he said, I say that because the topics he chose relate to a slippery slope. I think Butker had good intentions…maybe, but again what he said isn’t something to be broadcasted necessarily. On the other hand, what Williams et al said here is meant to discredit and diminish what Butker said even if what he said was meant to “compliment” women and mothers. Therefore, I agree with you. In fact, they (women) do actually need us (men), just like we need them 😉.

      Delete
    2. hang on, just to clarify: telling women they wasted their time on an education and that their true calling lies in being wives and mothers so men can do their thing, that's a compliment?
His only merit is recognizing that he'd be nothing without the endless sacrifices of his wife. The poor woman is raising him too.

      Delete
    3. no. You should “hang on” 😆

That’s not what he said. I listened to the entire speech. I don’t think you did. You heard parts, simply listened or read part, now posting about what you inferred and conveniently heard.

And you’re just further proving my point about this situation and “women’s” response to this 😉.

You’re attacking him and making a definitive statement about him and men in general by saying “ his only merit” and “he’d be nothing without” and we all know that’s not true. With your logic, he’s no good now because of what he said or didn’t say? Aren’t you participating in the exact type of behavior you’re complaining about?

Just like racism, thanks for continuing to supply the 💨 for gaslighting 🙄.

      Delete
    4. yep. Of course. And please don’t say something ridiculous. I don’t care for butker. He’s too extreme from the religious angle for me. And initially he lost me when he made passive aggressive jabs at certain groups. But you can’t deny he was complimenting women and mothers.

These 3 ladies saying “we don’t need you”…what is that supposed to mean? It’s just a dumb set of comments, much like some of Butker’s. So if that’s the equality you’re referring to well that’s fine but is misguided, at best. Shortsighted for sure.

      Delete
    5. you have a point. But, unfortunately, I think women have reached their tipping point. (read Malcolm Gladwell). We are done being the nice ones who shouldn’t say the mean things back to men. Being “ladylike”. All it’s leading to at this point is more & more control by men. And I think it might be going to backfire on you.
NO he want complimenting WOMEN. Mothers yes, WOMEN NO. They are DIFFERENT!! He basically told women to stay in their lane & be mothers & SAH wives. Believe it or not, that’s not a COMPLIMENT!
You guys need to educate yourselves & develop a little empathy. So, while you have a point, I think it just might be too late.

      Delete
    6. we’ve all reached our tipping point 😉. This isn’t a he vs she thing or need to be lady like or not speak up. This is about working together and not playing victim. I’m a single dad with 4 children. I know EXACTLY what it’s like to be oppressed, discriminated against, bias, etc I can assure you and I have every reason to be bitter but I don’t go around inferring and injecting negative agendas like what these 3 women did in their speech. Just because I’m not female or black for that matter doesn’t mean I don’t know what I’m talking about here and that’s exactly what you and others are thinking 😉.

Like I said, I don’t like butker, I don’t agree with most of what he spoke on but he was NOT telling women to stay in their lane. He was saying that as a women, if you choose to be mom or wife or to be in a career such as pro athlete or business he respects that choice. Because it is a choice. He was also saying it’s more difficult to make the choice of mom, wife etc than other paths and he’s very appreciative and respectful of that.

I think, at the point where he started talking about LGBQT and other “male” religious oriented comments, it pissed you and other women off and critical thinking disabled. I get it. It pissed me off too. But you sometimes you half to ensure your critical thinking resumes 😉.

The guy is anti gay marriage. He’s not ok with the “I associate as” situation and he feels that you are biologically what you are from a scientific standpoint. But that doesn’t mean he’s saying to women “stay in you lane, do as your told, etc.” it’s a mistake to think as such.

      Delete
    7. we will just have to agree to disagree, Tim. Not arguing w/ men like you.

    8. I have to say that you have an awful lot of free time & money for a single father of 4. One pic of a kid, tons of sports, fancy cars you appear to own, etc. somehow, having been a single mother of 2 w/ no help, it doesn’t ring quite right. I’d bet there’s more to the story. Just wondering…

      Delete
    9. that’s your call and certainly acceptable.

      Delete
    10. or maybe, maybe, I have a lot of wealthy friends, work really hard, paid well. spend a lot of time with my kids (as any dad or parent should)? I’m sorry that you don’t have help with your children. With that, I immediately have a level of respect for you. I really do. I know what a dead beat parent is a challenge to deal with. Interestingly, I was treated like one even though I was far from that. In short, it was quite the opposite in my situation so like I said, I have reason to be bitter yet I’m on your side. Seriously.
